Todays topic I think is pretty relatable to most people (including myself)! I understand that many of you have simply made the decision that you cannot afford to be healthy. What if I told you it could be possible! If your truly willing to be healthy, you can always find a way! In this post I would like to provide you with a few tips on staying within your budget and living a healthier lifestyle! The only catch is, you have to WANT it!
First and foremost, plant a garden! You live in an apartment? Thats okay, you can still do a few things to produce free food for yourself! There are some plants that do just fine on your windowsill where there is adequate sunshine! Some of these include; herbs, scallions, microgreens, and mushrooms just to name just a few!
Also, there are residential areas or even spaces within a city that provide community gardens! You can join fellow gardeners by helping grow delicious food to harvest! Not only is this a cheaper way to add more veggies to your diet, but it can also be very therapeutic!
If you have a home and just a little bit of extra time (even a few hours a week), give gardening a try! If you think you can handle an inexpensive new pet, I highly recommend getting some chickens. Eggs are a good source of protein and you would never have to buy them at the store again!
Buy Whole Foods & Eliminate All Processed Foods
This is a big one! You would be very surprised at how much money you can save when you eliminate all the processed foods! Bread, cereal, cases of soda, snacks, pasta, etc... are all things that you can STOP buying! By replacing these foods with produce, you can actually be saving money!
Buying produce like avocados, bananas, and sweet potatoes will not only be cheaper, but will be FAR more satiating then processed food. Junk food is considered a "simple" carbohydrate which your body uses very quickly, thus you are hungry much sooner and burning through your groceries quicker!
The Dirty Dozen
I hear from people all the time that they can't afford to eat organic. I completely understand this! Fortunately though, organic is getting bigger and hopefully the prices will go down in the future! This can also lead back to the gardening thing. Free organic produce!
Heres the thing guys, the processed foods you might have been eating before can be much worse than eating non organic produce! Yes, non organic produce can be harmful and definitely has it's downsides BUT, that processed food is not organic either! Your better off eating a non organic apple, than eating a "Little Debbie!" This also goes for meat too!
If you CAN afford to buy some things organic, thats great! You don't have to buy everything organic if thats going to stop you from eating right. Theres a list called the dirty dozen that you can check outHEREto find out what produce is safer to buy non organic and the ones that are more important to buy organic. Personally, I don't always buy organic avocados. There has been studies done on pesticide residues with avocados, and it does not seep into the skin.
**NOTE:Do NOT just assume that all organic food is more expensive. Your assumption could walk you right past a sale that your store is having on those organic apples, and you just bought non organic apples for the same price or more!
Be honest with yourself. Could you really be saving money from other areas of your life? Maybe you buy yourself McDonalds breakfast on your way to work a few times a week, or a Starbucks coffee, or even monthly cable bills! Cut out the fast food, switch to Netflix or just get outside and limit some of your tv time! If you really want to look and feel your best, and you want to live without disease, then you will give yourself that opportunity!
I am not telling you this because I think it's easy and have never struggled! I'm not rich, my husband and I only share one car, and so on. But we prioritize our health over other things that aren't necessary in our lives! It's so worth waking up every morning loving how you look and feel, being happy, and living without illness!
All I can say is, at least give it a try. Make a budget and do what you can. Your body deserves your love and attention.
