Superfoods are foods that contain higher amounts of nutrients than others and are beneficial for optimal health! These nutrient rich foods contain high amounts of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and more! Eating superfoods as much as possible is the key! Some may think that adding a few superfoods to your plate without eliminating the foods that are decreasing your health will be of benefit, but this won't do you any good! Besides your obvious fruits and vegetables, here are some superfoods that aren't talked about as often. Take your health to the next level by adding these to your already healthy diet...

1.) Bone Broth.
Bone broth is one of my all time favorite super foods out there! I highly recommend making your own and letting it slow cook in your crockpot for a few days. Buying bone broth from the store is nothing like homemade when it comes to nutrients. Bone broth is packed with vitamins, minerals, collagen, gelatin, and amino acids. It is great for the joints, hair, skin, and nails, boosts the immune system, and can strengthen the lining of your stomach. Bone broth is great for those with leaky gut or any other gut related issues!
Although there has been some controversy about coffee, studiesare showing that coffee is quite the superfood! Coffee (without sugar and highly processed creamers!!) is loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. As you may know, antioxidants help protect your body from free radicals that cause aging. It is best to have no more then two cups a day before 12:00pm. Caffeine can effect your sleep patterns even if you drink it past noon! Although coffee is nutrient rich and has many health benefits, caffeine alone can be harmful. But no problem! Coffees amazing micronutrient profile balances out any harm caffeine could pose, making it a well balanced superfood!! Remember, dark roast is best! It has higher concentrations of nutrients. If you truly love coffee, I think dark roast has the best flavor! It is full bodied and has strong notes of chocolate taste! Also, I recommend making your coffee in a french press. This is a very clean and pure way to make coffee and it keeps the flavor nice and strong. If you are not using a french press, be sure to use coffee filters that haven't been bleached!
3.) Raw high quality animal products (raw eggs, raw fermented dairy, raw meat, raw butter).
Raw high quality animal products are in my opinion natures perfect food! They have a great macronutrient profile (fat, protein etc...). Being raw and in their natural state they contain all their enzymes, vitamins, minerals etc .. Heating these already perfect foods will destroy vital nutrients and can actually be harmful by producing free radicals in the body! Check out my previous post on my blog page for more information about raw animal products!
4.) Micro greens.
Micro greens are an essential ingredient in my salads and a powerhouse when it comes to micronutrients! The most popular micro greens are from kale, broccoli watercress, radishes, arugula, and bok choy. Micro greens are the beginning stages of the plants growth (once they have just sprouted). In those beginning stages they contain the most nutrients so that they can grow into big beautiful healthy mature plants and their easy to absorb nutrients can really take your health to the next level!
5.) Bone Marrow.
This might sound gross to you but this top on my superfood list! Bone marrow is seriously one of the most nutritious foods out there. Bone marrow is the jelly-like substance in the center of the bone. It is high in monounsaturated fats, CLA, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. The healthy fats in bone marrow are crucial for brain health and development, and like bone broth it is excellent for your joints, hair, skin, and nails. Due to its high amounts of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) it is known for improving your immune system. The benefits of bone marrow make it of one the greatest superfoods of all time!
6.) Fermented Vegetables.
Fermented vegetables are not only super delicious but they pose many health benefits! By consuming fermented vegetables you are establishing or maintaining a health bacterial balance. Any kind of fermented food is going to have an abundant amount of beneficial bacteria that your need for optimal health. Bacteria is so important. There is a 10 to 1 ratio of bacteria to cells in our body! These microscopic "bugs" improve our digestion, immune function skin, mood, and more! Not only is eating fermented vegetables good for our guts, but it is also good for our dental health. By chewing fermented food, you are actually cleaning your mouth. We need good bacteria to fight off the bad odor causing bacteria that resides in our mouth. Fermented foods can be very detoxifying too. Also the fermentation process preserves the nutrients in the vegetables!
7.) Organ Meats.
Organ meats are one of the healthiest most nutrient dense parts of an animal. The organs are one of the first things that a predator in the wild goes for once its made the kill, and for a good reason! Organ meats are best known for their high mineral content, B vitamins, vitamin D, essential fatty acids (EPA & DHA) and more! Organ meats are also very high in CoQ10. CoQ10 is the energy of every cell in our body. It is a major antioxidant! CoQ10 plays many important roles in the body like improving cardiovascular health, energy, cell protection and more!
And last but NOT least, sardines! Some may think YUCK! But sardines can improve your health tremendously. Sardines are very high in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA). These types of essential fatty acids are crucial for brain health, mood, inflammation and more. Sardines are also known for their high protein content and vitamin B-12. Since sardines feed on plankton, these little guys contain very low amounts of any heavy metals compared to other fish.
Although there are many great superfoods out there, these are some of the top on my list! Obviously I can't stress enough about the quality of these superfoods! Organic, grass fed, wild caught, pasture-raised, and non-GMO sources are highly recommended! This will not only ensure that you are eating the cleanest food possible, but also that you are getting the highest amount of nutrients from your food.
