Today I want to address the amazing benefits of RAW animal products! As crazy as it may sound, eating animal products this way can really take your health to the next level. But first we MUST discuss quality!
The quality of your animal products is so important. Especially if you are eating them raw. When you buy your meat you want to make sure it is pasture-raised (check out my prior post about pasture-raised meats), certified organic, and grass-fed. You want it to say "100% grass-fed" or "grass-fed and finished". The importance of it saying grass-finished is because some companies will actually feed them grain, corn, and/or soy at the last stages of their life. Pasture-raised quality animals are of great health and are not as susceptible to harmful bacteria/antibiotics like feed lot animals are. They have much higher amounts of vitamins, essential fatty acids, and minerals. This also goes for raw dairy and eggs as well!
Still can't see yourself biting into raw meat? Well did you know that we actually have E. coli in our guts? Because of stories told about the dangers of E. coli, we are lead to believe it is only harmful to us. We need E. coli just like we need all of the other strains of bacteria that reside in our gut. It is an ecosystem! (I will discuss more about the micro-biome in a later post.) The whole "good bacteria," "bad bacteria" thing isn't necessarily true. We need both. Its just when we end up with a very high level of a particular strain that could be harmful. Which by the way is extremely rare from eating quality raw meats! The only meat I don't recommend eating raw is chicken. This meat is more dense and more susceptible to an overgrowth of bacteria.
Because raw meat is in its natural state (as well as raw eggs and raw dairy) it contains all of its vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids. When you cook these foods you are cooking away certain nutrients that are crucial for optimal health. Raw meat is very easy to digest as well. All of the enzymes are in tact and not cooked out. Because of all the healthy fats in raw meat, it is also very detoxifying. I feel so awesome after I eat raw meat! I feel like I have more energy and better digestion! Raw eggs are truly a superfood too! They are loaded with nutrients that are great for the hair, skin, and nails, like vitamins A, E, D, and Biotin (as well as all the other B vitamins). There is actually good cholesterol (HDL) in eggs! Cholesterol in its raw form helps your body fight inflammation and boost the immune system. When you cook an egg you are cooking the cholesterol which is oxidizing it. Thats when it becomes a problem. You are now allowing free radicals to enter your body by cooking cholesterol which speeds up aging. Cholesterol in its raw untouched form that comes from food is actually an antioxidant!
