What does Primal/Paleo mean?
The Paleo diet is simply eating the way we believe our paleolithic ancestors ate. When I mean ancestors I mean over 10,000 years ago. Before modern science and technology, before agriculture, and before grocery stores! Our distant hunter/gatherers obviously didn't eat any processed or packaged foods! They hunted for meat and foraged for vegetation. They were strong, lean, and of good health. They were eating real whole foods. Paleo or not, can't we agree that eating clean nutritous unprocessed whole foods can only better our health? I think so! Though we may be living much longer today, we live with many diseases due to the lack of proper nutrition and movement. We are not living the quality of life our paleolithic ancestors did. Some think that the paleo diet is all about meat, but that is not necessarily true. Meat does not have to be a part of every meal, nor does it have to be in large portions. The other food groups involved are just as important!
Primal is a term used when you have a paleo based diet but you also consume dairy products. Most likely our ancestors were not milking wild animals, but there are many health benefits found today from good quality raw dairy. Although I am mostly paleo, I like to occasionally enjoy some raw grass-fed dairy products. (I will discuss the benefits of raw animal products in a later post). The foods to enjoy when your living a Primal/Paleo lifestyle are simply, meat (fish, fowl, eggs, organs, etc.), vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and high quality raw dairy! To some it may seem minimal, but think of all the variations of this food. I noticed I eat much more variety than I use to! You would be surprised at all the awesome recipes you can come up with! You basically want to avoid anything else that doesn't include the foods above. Staying away from grains (cereal, pasta, bread, etc.), Legumes (peanuts, beans, etc.), processed sugars, processed oils (high in omega-6) and processed packaged foods. You will will love how you feel and how amazing REAL food can be!
